MACDONALD PARK

Public BBQ

Macdonald Park sprawls across an entire block in inner east Armidale, offering that rare commodity in town planning - genuine space to breathe. The diagonal footpaths create an oddly satisfying geometry as they slice toward each corner, while ancient trees cast their shadows across what is admittedly a rather flat landscape. The playground equipment here is surprisingly challenging, catering to various ages with climbing apparatus that would make a scout leader proud. Though positioned uncomfortably close to the main road for my liking, it keeps the children thoroughly entertained. The BBQ facilities work reliably - always a pleasant surprise - and the toilets, while basic, are generally in acceptable condition. What struck me most was the park's versatility. Families gather for weekend barbecues, couples stroll the open spaces, and dog owners appreciate the room to roam, though they'll need to bring their own water as the taps are perpetually turned off.
